A powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan on Wednesday, the strongest in 25 years. It caused four deaths and over 50 injuries in the eastern county of Hualien, where the epicenter was located.

Devastating news from Taiwan today as a powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck, marking the strongest tremor to hit the island in over 25 years. The quake, centered in the mountainous and sparsely populated eastern county of Hualien, claimed four lives and left over 50 individuals injured.

Taiwan Earthquake Today Consequences:

At least 26 buildings have collapsed, with more than half of them located in Hualien. Approximately 20 individuals are believed to be trapped within the wreckage, and rescue operations are currently underway.

Television stations in Taiwan have broadcasted footage depicting buildings precariously tilted in Hualien, the epicenter of the earthquake. The seismic event occurred just offshore around 8 am local time, catching people off guard as they were commuting to work and school. According to the Taiwan Central Weather Administration, the quake had a depth of 15.5 kilometers (9.6 miles), indicating its significant impact on the region.


“According to Chang Yu-Lin, a 60-year-old hospital worker from Taipei, the earthquake felt incredibly powerful, almost as if the house might collapse.”

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that small tsunami waves reached certain areas of Okinawa, located in the southern prefecture. Subsequently, they revised the earlier tsunami warning to an advisory, assessing the earthquake’s magnitude at 7.7.”

“The Philippines Seismology Agency issued a warning to residents residing in coastal regions across various provinces, advising them to move to higher ground as a precautionary measure.

Taiwan 2018 Earthquake and its consequences

The most recent significant earthquake to strike Taiwan prior to this devastating event was in February 2018. On February 6, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake hit the city of Hualien, located on the eastern coast of Taiwan. The quake caused extensive damage to buildings, including the collapse of several residential and commercial structures. Tragically, the earthquake claimed the lives of 17 individuals, with many more injured.

In the aftermath of the earthquake, rescue efforts were launched to search for survivors trapped under the rubble. Emergency services, along with volunteers and military personnel, worked tirelessly to provide aid and support to those affected. The government declared a state of emergency in Hualien, mobilizing resources to address the immediate needs of residents and to begin the process of rebuilding and recovery.

The earthquake also highlighted the vulnerability of Taiwan to seismic activity, given its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates converge. This event underscored the importance of preparedness and resilience in the face of natural disasters, prompting renewed efforts to improve infrastructure and emergency response capabilities across the island.
